Breviario de podredumbre, de E. M. Cioran

This is gorgeous gall, beautiful bile, ethereal effluence, translated with a sublime breviairo. Op dat moment besloot ik ermee te stoppen, en me te wijden aan het Frans. As dejected, disaffected and depressed as I find myself in certain moments, even I found A Short History of Decay to be an over-cooked, under-thought, pile of tripe. Basta que puedan ser pensadas, para que sean. How Cioran could live with thoughts like these and not end his own life is beyond me, but like a character out of Beckett he continues going on. Waarom blijven schrijven in een idioom dat enkel toegankelijk is voor een miniem aantal landgenoten, eigenlijk maar een stuk of twintig? Granted, these are aphorisms, and expecting rigorous deductive reasoning out of them is somewhat misguided—but that doesn’t stop the fact that so much dd what is written here is utterly vacuous despite how prettily it is dressed up.

Despite the fact that this is kind of a contradiction I think that if we read and try to make an analogy it again sounds like a joke.

Yet despite it all, this book was great – beautifully written, darkly amusing in places and interesting – I didn’t agree with all, or most, cioraj Cioran said, but I did get immersed in his world and perceptions. To follow your ‘description’ I am more like a mixed type: To say it’s a “downer” is an understatement of epic proportions but it’s a fascinating read all the same.

Cioran geeft commentaar, verwerkt gedachten, bekritiseert en dient collega-denkers van antwoord. After Nietzsche finishes philosophizing with his hammer, tearing down all of our illusions, he provides us with the tools to begin building anew.

Though I suppose dressing it up in the language of ‘mortality’ does make it seem more poignant and less trite.

Oh, the irony I feast on! But here’s the thing: Feb 17, aaron rated it really liked it. His philosophy is one of absolute futility, in which suicide is the most noble act, and any motion towards civilisation, culture or the pursuit of knowledge is entirely misguided. You really have to be mad to love it.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone that podreddumbre positively about their future or anyone that is part of a national movement.

I’d have liked to read further for the comedy factor, since he follows long nihilistic digressions with bizarre, wholly uncharacteristic praise for frivolity.
