The book had a profound influence on many other artists, including Jim Morrison and David Bowie. And like “On The Road”, this book seems so far to be more about the journey than the destination.

I had to force myself to get through it. Rechy continued to struggle with his own vulnerabilities as his need to be sexually desired grew more urgent. But what didn’t appeal to me in this book is the majority of the stories.

OR, perhaps because I really enjoyed his language and prose throughout it. The book includes writing about the Cooper Do-nuts Riotwhich happened in in Los Angeles, when the lesbians, gay men, transgender people, and drag queens who hung out at Cooper Do-nuts and who were frequently harassed by the LAPD fought back after police arrested three people, including Rechy.
But it hit The New York Times bestseller list even before the official publication date. I can’t say that I miss it, but it was nice knowing that it was around. Bits of this book are certainly 4-star, a few chapters may even merit 5, but the overall journey through the nocturnal world of s America’s gay hustling scene, over almost pages of small print, was just a little too arduous for my liking.

Much of the vernacular did fill in some missing blanks and made me understand many terms still floating about on the modern scene. Occasionally the narrator’s writing felt a bit overcooked, but I loved the dialogue for the same reason I didn’t like the description. But like the end of the scene – after another orgasm the human connection is lost.
It was an awakening that set him on the journey recht would lead to City of Night. I’m glad to see it’s still available, and amazed that its reissue has caused me such a visceral reaction on this fog-bound, living-room comfortable, cozy and warm Thanksgiving morning.
