Review of D&D Basic (Moldvay)
It usually says what type of save is needed for every spell or monster ability, so figuring out which one to use isn’t usually that hard. If the party goes first and decides to run, the reaction roll is made just as if the monsters had started the encounter. This does make tracking time sound pretty easy. There are a few effects that add a -2 modifier to the roll because that save is supposed to be harder than usual, but that’s it.
It mostly does what you know, but it has a duration of 10 minutes. I think what went wrong with that campaign is they didn’t have John Harper playing that much, so they lacked that crucial power gamer which Adam was targetting with his aggressive rules as written style.

An interesting little note here is that it says that players should get about three quarters of their XP from finding treasure and only the remaining molfvay from defeating monsters. Moldvay gives weapons individual damage ratings. Web is always a fun spell, at least in theory. Incidentally, I still have one of the cyan d20’s. And last there’s a couple of ideas where to put all the treasure and some traps.

Holmes preferred a lighter tone with more room for personal improvisation, while Gary Gygax, who wrote the advanced game, wanted an expansive game with rulings on any conceivable situation which might come up during play, a document which could be used to arbitrate disputes at tournaments.

Yes, many of these spells are pretty awesome. Holmes offers dozens of spells level It seems arbitrary and random, which I find quite frustrating. If you create a monster, it has a lowly Armor Class of 9 or 11 if sensible math is used and any hit against it will automatically end it. Both of them are true to varying degrees for all the editions prior to v3. The players already avoided combat a lot and were very risk averse knowing that death could await.
It is worth noting that of you read Moldvay, and then go and read Holmes, the organization of rules in the two books are quite different.
Likewise, killing fleeing enemies would be a waste of time and energy that needs to be spent getting to where they’re going. It’s important to note that at no point during that book was battle sought – it was pretty much always a defensive action, with the party holding off attackers until such time as either the enemy fled or the attack molvday off for long enough for the party to flee.
The suggested party size is 6 to 8 characters.
And since most stuff you pick up and put down are coins, the weight of a coin is also the basic unit of moldvya. If you can decide to cast or not only after initiative is rolled, you already know if you might possibly moldcay injured before your turn, or if you are completely safe.
However, it will last for at least 90 minutes and even longer for higher level casters. And you also can cast it on a creatures eyes. There is no evil alignment in this game and so evil intentions are left for the GM to define.

Mentzer took it a step further. I don’t like using Common as moldvah language. If a thief wants to sneak past some guards, it’s a single roll. Exploring The party does any of those things mentioned previously as part of exploring. If any use could be the last, I am never going to use any of them ever! In an abandoned castle inhabited by goblins, mmoldvay lot of the wandering monsters should be patroling goblins.
